Building an app for UK users in 2026
The UK is one of Europe's biggest app markets, with iPhone and Android close to evenly split, so you almost always need both platforms from day one. It also has its own rulebook. This is what we plan for with UK clients.
Data protection after the Data (Use and Access) Act
The Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 kept UK GDPR but changed several details that affect product design. Analytics cookies used only to improve your own service can now be set without consent in more cases, a new list of "recognised legitimate interests" such as crime prevention and safeguarding vulnerable people removes the balancing test for some processing, and automated decisions are allowed more widely as long as people can contest them and reach a human. Since June 2026, every controller also needs a way for people to raise data-protection complaints. The EU renewed its adequacy decision for the UK in December 2025, so data can still flow freely between the UK and EU.
Online safety and children
If your app lets users post, message or upload content, or includes search, the Online Safety Act probably applies. Ofcom expects risk assessments for illegal content and, where children can use the service, measures to protect them, including age checks before showing pornography or other harmful content. We build reporting, blocking and moderation tools and connect certified age-assurance providers rather than inventing our own checks.
Payments that UK users trust
Cards and Apple Pay are expected everywhere. For larger amounts and subscriptions, Pay by Bank and Direct Debit reduce card fees and failed payments. If you offer buy-now-pay-later, the FCA regime that started on 15 July 2026 requires affordability checks and clear information before purchase, which affects your checkout design.
Health and care
We have built healthcare software before, including UTP Medics' telemedicine platform. For NHS-facing products, clinical safety (DCB0129 for the manufacturer and DCB0160 for the deploying organisation), DTAC evidence, NHS login and FHIR interfaces are usually needed before procurement. We produce the technical evidence; your clinical safety officer signs it off.
Where we host
For UK clients we normally deploy to AWS London, Azure UK South or Google Cloud London, with backups in a second UK or EU region. That keeps latency low for UK users and makes your data-residency answers simple.
What working with us looks like
You get a named project manager and a fixed team. We start with a discovery call in your morning, send a written proposal with a fixed price or monthly rate, sign an NDA and data-transfer agreement, and then run weekly demos with a staging app you can install. As a rough guide, a focused MVP costs US$5,000–$15,000, a mid-sized app $15,000–$40,000 and complex platforms start from around $40,000. See our app development cost guide for what drives the price.
