Building an app for Canadian users
Canada looks like the US from a distance, but the details differ: two official languages, a federal privacy law plus Quebec's much stricter regime, Interac instead of US-style debit, and iPhone holding an even larger share of mobile traffic than in the US. This is what we cover with Canadian clients.
Bilingual by design
If you do business in Quebec, French is not optional. Since June 2025, Quebec's language rules have also tightened for product packaging, trademarks and signage, and businesses with 25 or more employees must register with the Office québécois de la langue française. Fines run from C$3,000 to C$30,000 per offence for companies and each day can count separately. We set up both languages from the first sprint, design for longer French labels and give your translators context screenshots so the French reads naturally.
Privacy: PIPEDA today, Bill C-36 tomorrow
Bill C-27 died in January 2025, and its replacement, Bill C-36 (the Protecting Privacy and Consumer Data Act), was introduced in June 2026 with fines of up to C$10 million or 3% of global revenue. Until it passes, PIPEDA and the provincial laws in Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia apply. Building to Law 25 now — privacy by default, consent per purpose, portability — leaves you well placed for whatever the federal law becomes.
Hosting in Canada
Many Canadian enterprises, public bodies and health organisations prefer data stored in Canada. AWS (Montreal and Calgary), Microsoft Azure (Toronto and Quebec City) and Google Cloud (Montreal and Toronto) all run Canadian regions, and we can keep every component of your stack in the country.
Payments Canadians trust
Interac Debit and e-Transfer are part of everyday life. We support Interac online and inside Apple Pay and Google Pay, use e-Transfer Request Money for invoices and B2B payments, and design payment code so Real-Time Rail can be added when banks switch it on.
Working with us from Canada
We agree a daily overlap window in your morning and keep building while you are offline, with daily written updates and weekly demos. As a rough guide, a focused MVP costs US$5,000–$15,000, a mid-sized app $15,000–$40,000 and complex platforms start from around $40,000.
